Gut health is a topic that has gained more coverage over the last 10 years due to the expansion of the alternative health movement and people’s desire to take control of their own health.
One of my old mentors that I trained with in my early years, more than 20 years ago, believed that most chronic health issues could be solved by changing the environment of the gut, through diet, lifestyle changes, pH balance (creating a more alkaline environment), detoxing through elimination of certain foods and additives and finally dealing with killing off existing bad bacteria, parasites and viruses that he believed infested the body. This old guy was ahead of his time and helped many overcome various physical and mental health challenges.
Today most naturopaths use much the same principles as the above, myself included, modifying a specific treatment plan for each individual.
However, if you want to start improving your physical and mental health and general well being now, all you need is the motivation and desire to undertake the following simple steps. By following these steps you will be performing a simple, natural detoxification for yourself. This is a very general diet change, if you are aware that you have allergies to certain foods, you can modify the list of foods to suit you.
STEP ONE - AVOID THESE FOODS AND DRINKS
Packaged and processed foods, MSG, sugars, coffee, alcohol, all sweetened soft drinks, all artificially sweetened soft drinks, all commercially produced juices, table salt, hydrogenated fats, bacon and all processed meats, pork, wheat, gluten, all commercially produced sauces, baked pastries, grains (except rice), diet and low fat processed products.
STEP TWO - EAT FOODS AND DRINKS THAT NOURISH
Fresh veges, fruit in small amounts, proteins like fish, organic chicken, lamb, free range eggs, full fat cheeses, full fat yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, fresh smoothies, fresh juices with pulp and fibre, coconut juice, drink plenty of purified water (free of chlorine and fluoride).
STEP THREE - INCLUDE HEALTHY FATS
Like fish, nuts (beware of allergies), seeds (sunflower, chia, flax), olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, full fat dairy products (be aware of allergies).
STEP FOUR - WHEN TO EAT
Always eat breakfast to start metabolism, break your day into 5 to 6 small meals and try to eat dinner by 7.00pm and don’t eat anything later.
If you can make these general dietary changes part of your lifestyle you should start to see positive changes.
